This is a longer version of Bolger’s 15’6" Light Dory. I designed this one for up to three people and has a potential load carrying capacity of over 1000 lbs.! It rows easily and will be a great way for you or you and your friends to get around on the water in style.

Unlike the original light dory, which needed a strong back for building, we designed this boat for the much easier tack and tape construction technique.

They originally designed dories as commercial fishing boats and they were known for their exceptional seaworthiness and load carrying capacity. This dory is also incredibly easy to row, making row cruising practical, in addition to relaxed poking around or just looking at the scenery.

Because of their good looks dory designs are into trouble if you try to adapt them to uses for which they are not designed On the bottom of one of the plan’s sheets is Bolger’s usual admonishment on dories: “It’s possible to rig this boat to sail, and to mount an outboard motor. She will be a poor performer under sail, worse under power, and will be more or less degraded for rowing in each case. Designer won’t cooperate in the process.” This is that rare exercise in Common Sense, a boat designed to do only one thing. It does it better than anything else.

This boat conjures dreams of Grand Banks fishermen. I might build one to chase steelhead in the West Coast white water rivers.
