This is the most boat for the money anywhere! The Pirogue is one of those rare boats that claims to do almost everything, and does it, very well indeed. In reality there are a few things this boat can't quite do. It will not pull a water skier, it will not wake the neighbors on Saturday morning and it probably should not cross the Atlantic. With that out of the way, here are a few of the things Pirogue will do.

bulletShe is a river & sea kayak
bulletA car top fishing boat
bulletA sliding seat exercise machine
bulletA row boat
bulletA way to explore new waterways
bulletA silent sight seer
bulletA lake canoe

On top of everything Pirogue is an exhilarating sailor when the wind comes up. It might even make a good dingy for a Micro or Martha Jane.

All this, in a boat that is inexpensive and very easy to build. The prototype Pirogue was built by professional boat builder Dave Montgomery for $38 in 16 hours. Mine took almost two weeks of leisurely building, half of which was spent painting, and about $150. But then I am not a professional builder. The point is, this is about as easy as a boat can be to build, a perfect first project or a father and son effort.

The results of a Pirogue building project is more rewarding than boats costing many times the amount in time and materials. In the water, Pirogue is very stable, instilling a confidence in the captain that is hard won in a regular canoe or kayak. You can carry the sailing rig, two oars and oarlocks, three paddles and a cooler completely out of the way, leaving plenty of room for the captain and crew.

If there is no wind and you want to get somewhere in a hurry, row; when you get there and want to sight see, take out the paddles. When the wind comes up, set up the lee board and rudder, step the mast and hold on. Because of its flat bottom, long water line and narrow beam, Pirogue really moves under sail. Yet with its small sail area, and great stability, it is easy to hold upright in a breeze. In the unlikely event of a capsize, Pirogue carries enough flotation that it is easily righted and bailed out. She is a perfect sail trainer, yet is exhilarating for the experienced sailor.

If you have been looking for the perfect all around boat, or want an inspiring first time building project, Pirogue is the boat for you.
