For good windward performance, cat-yawl rigs depend more than sloops on well-cut sails. With the proper sail cut, they are every bit as efficient as a sloop. With flat or improperly cambered sails they will be, quite literally, dogs. Cat yawl mainsails need to be cut with very deep draft about 1/3 back from the luff, and flat from there to the leach. We cut mizzens flat to enhance the ability to provide directional control and reduce slating.

I finally found a sail maker who could produce sails up to Common Sense Boats standards after several years of searching. I have worked out an agreement to have these sails produced under the Common Sense name to assure that they continue to meet my goal of high quality at a reasonable price. We cut the sails from quality Dacron in weights appropriate to the boat design. All requirements are rigorously followed to assure maximum life and performance.

You will find we have very competitively priced Common Sense sails. Don’t handicap your creation with the wrong suit of sails.
